St. Juan Diego holy card, with a prayer to the saint on the reverse.

On Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, while Juan Diego walked to church, he heard the sound of birds singing on a hill and someone calling his name. Climbing the hill he found a Lady, surrounded by light. The Lady spoke to him in calling him "her little son". She asked Juan Diego to tell the Bishop of Mexico that she wanted a shrine, to be built on the spot where she stood, in her honor.

Recognizing the Lady as the Virgin Mary, Juan Diego went to the Bishop but the Bishop was doubtful and told Juan Diego he needed proof. Juan Diego returned to the hill and explained to the Lady that the bishop did not believe him. He implored the Lady to use another messenger, pleading he was not worthy. The Lady however insisted that it must be Diego speaking to the Bishop on her behalf. Again, Juan Diego did as the Lady directed, but again the Bishop asked for some sort of sign.

Upon returning home, he discovered his uncle seriously ill. The next morning, December 12, Juan Diego decided not to meet with the Lady, but to find a priest who could administer the last rites to his dying uncle. When he tried to avoid walking past the their meeting place, the Lady appeared on his path and assured him that his uncle would not die. She then asked him to climb the hill and gather flowers. Given the time of year, Diego was shocked to find roses in full bloom. Stranger still, they were flowers not native to the region but from an area in Spain, which was the former home of bishop. Upon presenting his cloak to the Bishop, Diego opened it and the roses cascaded to the floor, and Diego thought surely this would be enough proof for the Bishop. However what brought the Bishop to his knees were not only the flowers but an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously impressed on the cloth.

My original illustration, drawn first in pen and digitally colored, printed on 80 lb. stock and finished with a nice heavy lamination. All cards are trimmed by hand (typically mine or one of my two dogs) making them truly a non mass produced item that is unique and created with care.

Card size is 2.5 x 4.5 inches.
Prayer cards are nice little reminders to take small moments out of our hectic days for reflection. Perfect to use as a bookmark, stick in a mirror, or anywhere eyes will happen upon it, and a great little thoughtful item to tuck into a card for a wee gift to mail.

All cards can be personalized on the reverse to celebrate confirmations, baptisms, first communions, church groups, weddings or anniversaries. Minimum order of 12. There is a $20 design fee and will need a 2 or 3 week turnaround time. Please inquire for more information.

Thanks for looking!
