St Brigid of Ireland (Kildare) is one of three patron saints of Ireland. Born into slavery, Brigid was known to have been a very generous and caring child, always ready to give anything she had to someone. Trouble was many times the items were not hers to give away. At a young age she was sold to work in a dairy, where the milk was made into butter and cheese. One story was that a group of poor people came to beg for food and Brigid nearly gave away all of the owners inventory to help feed the hungry crowd. Another story tells of her father (an Irish chief), exhausted from her charitable contributions of his possessions, took her to the high king of Ireland to see if he would like to buy his beautiful daughter as a slave. While he was inside discussing the potential purchase, Brigid gave away her father's jewel incrusted sword to a man who asked for food. Not knowing what else to do with her, her father allowed to become a nun and she built a hut beneath a giant oak tree where other nuns came to construct huts and live and work with Brigid. These nuns, know as the first Sisters of Mercy, took care of the poor and sick, tended to children who were without parents, and those who were hungry. Eventually the king gave Brigid the land where they lived and her establishment became a proper monastery and was named Kildare, celtic for church of the oak. There are many stories attributed to her works of charity and good naturedness.
Brigid is also attributed to the poem - Lake of Beer. Your choice for the reverse of the card is either a prayer to St. Brigid or her poem with a blessing to beer.
Although Brigid is highly venerated, there was not enough plausible history of her actual existence and during the Second Vatican Council she was removed from the Liturgical Calendar, but I still like her message and wanted to include her in my collection anyway, so there. Plus I got to draw a cow so I look it as a win, win.
Her feast day is the 1st of February, and she is the patron saint of beer, dairy workers, Ireland, cattle, children born into abusive families, infants, midwives, to name a few.

I love the prayer on the back of this card. The seller was friendly and helpful. The original package of prayer cards I ordered got lost in the mail, and the seller resent them at no extra charge. I'm very grateful.
