This oversized and Asian inspired holy card for St. Margaret of Antioch and the dragon would be a perfect bookmark and motivational card as a reminder when the devil's got you down you have the power to overcome whatever life throws at you.
Margaret was the daughter of a pagan priest born sometime during the 4th century in Antioch, a region that is now Turkey. Her mother having died during childbirth, Margaret was cared for by a country nurse that converted her to Christianity. When her father discovered she had committed her life to Christ, he disowned her and she left to live with the nurse. One day while Margaret was tending sheep, the Roman prefect Olybrius discovered her and wanted to either marry her or make her his concubine, which did not sit well with Margaret. Upon her refusal she was discovered to be a Christian and thrown into prison and tortured. One story (that has since been discredited by Rome) is that while in prison the devil presented himself to her in the form of a dragon and swallowed Margaret whole. She was able to escape by aggravating his stomach with a crucifix she had in her possession.
St. Margaret is one of the 14 Holy Helpers* and was one of the 3 saints who Joan of Arc claimed as a child was visited and instructed by (along with St. Michael and St. Catherine) over the course of a few years, advising Joan on having a strict moral code.
She is the patron saint of of childbirth, pregnant women, dying people, kidney disease, peasants, exiles, and falsely accused people. Her feast day is July 20th.
This oversized prayer card is 2.5 x 8.5 inches with a Novena to St. Margaret on the reverse.
My original illustration, drawn first in pen and digitally colored, printed on 80 lb. stock and finished with a nice heavy lamination. All cards are trimmed by hand (typically mine or one of my two dogs) making them truly a non mass produced item that is unique and created with care.
Prayer cards are nice little reminders to take small moments out of our hectic days for reflection. Perfect to use as a bookmark, stick in a mirror, or anywhere eyes will happen upon it, and a great little thoughtful item to tuck into a card for a wee gift to mail.
All cards can be personalized on the reverse to celebrate confirmations, baptisms, first communions, church groups, weddings or anniversaries. Minimum order of 12. There is a $20 design fee and will require a 2 or 3 week turnaround time. Please inquire for more information.
