Good Saint Anne is the mother of the holy Virgin Mary and grandmother to Jesus. After twenty years of marriage, Anne and her husband, Joachim, were not able to conceive a children. One day Anne could not find Joachim and she feared he had left her because of their infertility. Anne despaired and prayed while she watched newborn birds in their nest in her garden. An angel appeared to tell her she would soon give birth to a daughter she was to name Mary and dedicate to God. Coincidentally, Joachim had certainly not left Anne but was off in the desert pleading with God too for a child. After a time of fasting he was graced with an angelic visit and told the same news. They happily reunited and boom, daughter 9 months later. Anne is typically represented as grandmotherly woman in art even though she was probably around 40 years of age at the time of Mary's birth.
St. Anne and Joachim share a feast day together on July 26th.
Her patronages are many, grab a seat; mothers, grandmothers and grandparents, pregnancy and women in labor, homemakers and housewives, childless couples, the poor, cabinet makers, miners, equestrians and stablemen, carpenters, lace makers, seamstresses and lost items to name a few. She is also the patroness of the countries of Canada and France and over 20 cities across the globe but I'm gonna give a shout out to my favorite, Detroit. Whoot!
